Ngay từ Lời Tựa (1,1-18), thánh sử Gio-an giới thiệu Đức Giê-su là Ngôi Lời của Thiên Chúa, mà "Ngôi Lời là Thiên Chúa"[1] (1,1), và "Ngôi Lời vẫn 'hướng về'[2] Thiên Chúa" (1,1-2). Mặt khác, chính Lời Tựa này và đặc biệt toàn bộ Tin Mừng Gio-an còn diễn tả một năng động khác của Đức Giê-su, là Ngôi Lời 'hướng về' con người. Trong vài thập kỷ gần đây, những cử hành chúc lành bị bỏ quên trong việc tái suy tư thần học và áp dụng mục vụ trong đời sống giáo hội. Hơn nữa, nhiều người cho rằng nghi thức chúc lành không phải là thiết yếu trong thực hành tôn giáo.
Hòa với tinh thần canh tân phụng vụ, cách riêng việc canh tân và áp dụng cử hành chúc lành trong bối cảnh hôm nay, bài viết trước hết tìm về khởi điểm và nhìn lại chặng đường phát triển của cử hành chúc lành với cột mốc quan trọng là Vatican II. Tiếp đến là một vài đúc kết suy tư thần học, và cuối cùng đi đến những phản tỉnh về việc áp dụng mục vụ cử hành chúc lành trong bối cảnh hiện nay.
